Fisher's Temperaments

THE quiz Helen Fisher's personality test assesses how the four major thinking and behavioral styles associated with the four basic brain systems are expressed. It also allows for a test of romantic compatibility between these four dimensions. The thinking styles are broken down as follows:

  • Explorer: Those who primarily express traits related to the dopaminergic system.
  • Constructor: Those who primarily express traits related to the serotonergic system.
  • Director: Those who primarily express traits related to the testosterone system.
  • Negotiator: Those who primarily express traits related to the estrogen system.

We are all a combination of these four trait constellations, but we express some more than others. Each of us has a unique combination of general traits, a unique "personality signature." The two main trait constellations that you express the most are called primary and secondary types.

Helen Fisher designed the questionnaire to help men and women understand the fundamentals of themselves and their partners. It can also be used to test compatibility with a potential soulmate.
