Diary of a future annuitant (74)

This publication is part 73 of 86 in the series Diary of a future rentier.

2020 is definitely a special year in every way. The Chinese virus first tested my portfolio by confirming its resilient nature, while the market was sinking. This supported the theoretical foundations on which it is built, as presented in my e-book. It also allowed me to reassure myself that I was already capable of getting out of the Rat Race by becoming financially independent.

However, while I can practically touch my dream with my fingertips, and I have been laying the structural foundations for about ten years to considerably reduce the influence of my work on my private life, I paradoxically have the impression of being pedaling at full speed against my objective. It has been a very long time since I had to invest so much time and energy for my employer, to the detriment of my physical, psychological and social well-being.

Of course, there is an emotional dimension that explains this phenomenon. It's a bit like the days before the holidays, we feel exhausted, exhausted, and we count the days, even the hours, before we can finally pull the plug. We have less energy and motivation when faced with the problems that arise in our path. I am certainly currently experiencing some of the same difficulties.

That being said, this damn virus, even if it has highlighted the qualities of my wallet, has also acted as a big kick in the anthill at the professional level. It smells like panic, tastes like panic, it is PANIC. TOTAL.

  1. I discovered your site and its wonderful articles when I entered the job market in a large Swiss bank at the beginning of 2016...

At the end of 2020, in a large French bank now and after two breaks already, I (re)read your prose with pleasure, and congratulate you on the progress made.

    See you in 4 years!

  2. It's not easy to manage the virus phenomena. Many portfolios have repositioned themselves on digital, which is only accelerating. Given that it's the future, it would be better to participate in it (new economy companies, etc.) not just the (tech/communication) US Large Cap.
