The grass is greener here

No, this article is not about cannabis, but about my joy of life and my gratitude for everything I have. Besides, I like reality, I leave the hallucinations to others.

I feel good about myself because I am satisfied with what I have, I don't feel the need to always have more. "Enough" is a magic word.

Comparing yourself to others brings nothing but frustration. You probably also know people who spend their entire salary but are not happier for it, who always want more and are constantly envious of what others have.

Have you seen his new car? He must be making some serious money! And what a nice house!

It is true that many people are much richer than I am, but I never forget that many more have much less. Some do not even have enough to eat or sleep warm.

Envy and jealousy only bring frustration. But I didn't always see things that way. I changed at the same time as my relationship with money changed.

I am grateful to have discovered the unlimited potential of stocks and to have the financial means to invest.

Investing today gives me the means to obtain tomorrow what is most precious to me: the possibility of doing what I want with my time without having to wait until I am 65.

Do not seek happiness in the futility of material possessions: it does not hide there.

  1. What a pleasure to read you again, bro.
We are always someone's rich (or poor).
You can be rich and live like a poor person and vice versa.

    1. This is true and that is why I wanted to remind people of the importance of being happy and grateful for everything we have and not taking for granted, for example, having enough to eat or being in good health.

I will always remember a meeting I had in Africa where this person told me: "Just being born in Switzerland is like having had 6 good numbers in the lottery."

  2. Thank you for this wise prose.
In particular, I note your phrase "The more things you own, the less free you are," which is very true.
The same goes for the phrase "Comparing yourself to others brings nothing but frustration." Unfortunately, humans tend to reason in relative and not absolute values, and therefore to compare themselves rather than looking at what they have. And the internet has multiplied the possibilities of comparing ourselves (think of those who display their real, embellished or invented lives).
For me, true wealth is not necessarily material: true wealth is freedom. But freedom comes through financial means that allow one to free oneself from obligations, contingencies and other constraints. That said, freedom is also about buying what one wants (for oneself, and not for show).

    1. It seems to me that this tendency to compare oneself to others is unfortunately almost innate in humans and that we must "unlearn" this behavior. I see it a lot with my children who often point out what their friends have rather than being satisfied with what they have.

I think it is especially with age and experience that we truly realize that in the end we have in our own garden the grass that we grow and maintain. In other words, the one that we have chosen and that we deserve.

  3. Well said! I often feel that many people, especially in Switzerland, do not realize how lucky we are to be residents of this country or others elsewhere in Europe that function well in many ways… Many complainers have not traveled enough.

    1. Very relevant remark Soon! Travel broadens horizons and shows us how spoiled we are. Unfortunately, happiness is often inversely correlated to the level of wealth (think for example of the suicide rate in Japan) and in a country like Switzerland many people "complain at a high level" rather than realizing how lucky they are.
