Diary of a future rentier (35)

This post is part 34 of 86 in the series Diary of a future rentier.

NewspaperTime passing... It is often said that when you are bored it passes slowly, while when you are having fun it passes quickly. How many times have you not been surprised when looking at your watch during a pleasant evening with friends, thinking that you had not seen the time pass? On the contrary, when you are sitting listening to a boring lecture or course you can sometimes look at your watch ten times in fifteen minutes, with the impression that time is literally suspended.

But have you ever noticed that when you have a heavy workload, high stress and frequent disruptions, you also feel like time is flying by? But you can't say it's because you're having fun...

In truth, when time flies, it is because our mind is distracted, not necessarily because it is having fun. It makes a big difference. We could just as easily distract it by using alcohol and drugs... time would fly by too. Of course, there are jobs that are fun, and happy are those who can benefit from them. But the average person does not have fun at work. Some (rare) do not have enough of it, and get bored, while others have too much of it, which stresses them out, with all the physical, psychological and social consequences that go with it.

Work is a form of drug because it distracts the mind from important realities. Thanks to it, time passes quickly and one might have the false impression that one is having fun, or at least that one is not bored. A small minority of us certainly realize it, but for the majority of us our job is at best a pastime and in the worst case a real burden on our body and mind.

By devoting our lives to work, we risk missing out on the important things. Time will have passed quickly, but it is a safe bet that we will find ourselves without realizing it on our deathbed wondering what we did with all these years.

We must therefore (re)become aware of our true values and re-appropriate activities which allow us to fulfil ourselves, rather than making profit for others.

And for that there is only one way, become a rentier.
