The classic trap of financial independence

One day we realize that it is completely futile to spend a large part of our time working, with the sole aim of feeding ourselves and buying goods that Consumer society pushes us to buy. This is the first step on the long road to financial independence, the one where we open our eyes.

While this step is necessary, it can unfortunately also lead us to make bad decisions. By realizing the dark side of work and consumption at all costs, we risk going into hibernation mode, where we live almost only to free ourselves from capitalist society.

Savings are made on the back of the needs of self-realization. Worse, while it was precisely one of the sources of dissatisfaction, working time increases in order to achieve the goals of financial independence as quickly as possible.

This path is unfortunately doomed to failure. It is the surest way to get tired along the way, or even to get tired to the point where we will have only worsened the situation that made us choose financial independence in the first place.

Le meilleur choix, lorsque l'on a pris conscience de la futilité de la rat race, c'est de commencer de suite à vivre comme un future rentier. Of course, you have to save a little and continue working, but you also have to start enjoying this new life, even if in the very beginning, this is still just a state of mind.

  1. I totally agree with this warning. Financial independence takes preparation… (but not too much, because otherwise you never leave your company). It is a subtle mix of preparation and anticipation, and a confidence in yourself and in the future that removes the barriers to taking the plunge.
For my part, I have already been living like a "future rentier" for 2 years: I quit my job and live my dreams by traveling (cafeduvoyage.com). My message to the reader would therefore be this: the good life is accessible! Persevere and train yourself, these are two very important pillars.
