We live in a world of lunatics. People who have the taste to undertake and create, those who assume and are responsible for their actions, no longer have a place in the professional world. We prefer peacocks, those who do nothing, except make a lot of noise. Worse, we repress them by controlling their work, limiting their autonomy, evaluating their performance according to more than questionable criteria and taking away all the financial and human resources necessary to achieve their objectives.
We no longer pay attention to achievements, but to mistakes. The one who worked like a madman is less well evaluated than the one who did nothing because the latter did not make any mistakes, by force of circumstances. The best paid people in companies are those who control and judge the work of others, not those who do it. Those who evaluate the achievement of objectives of their employees are the same ones who deprive the latter of the means to achieve them.
You have to constantly justify yourself, explain the same things, go in one direction, then go back according to the crazy ideas of the leaders. One day it's white, the next day it's black. You are criticized on elements of which not only are you aware but above all for which you have been asking in vain and for a long time for means to improve them. Worse, you are even deprived of resources.
We should always do more, with less, without ever receiving a raise. We are not far from the stage where we will have to accept salary cuts, while shareholders receive a 10% increase on their dividends each year. The days are long, the breaks are short, or even non-existent. Overtime accumulates and is rarely paid. As for recovering them in leave, it is useless to think about it... it is already almost impossible to take your vacation.
Let's talk about vacations. We pay for them personally before, during and after. Before, because we have to finish everything at all costs within the allotted time. During, because we have been so conditioned during the previous nine months that you are incapable of thinking about anything other than your work and you are already freaking out at the mere thought of starting again. Throughout, because your employer has kindly offered you a smartphone to prevent you from completely cutting ties. Finally, after, because when you go back to work, your email inbox literally explodes while your phone never stops ringing.
And while you sweat body and soul, the cicadas are lounging and covered in laurels. That's enough. I no longer accept that the added value I make in my job is eaten up by these parasites, colleagues, superiors and shareholders. I refuse to give up my private life a little more every day for people who are not worth it, just so that they can live better in my place.
Financial independence begins with independence, period. Rather than working for pests, I will work either with real entrepreneurs, either alone. But I will never work again For someone. It's time for the credit to go to those who keep the system alive, not those who destroy it.

It is true that some companies operate as you describe in your article. I have also experienced this in my previous positions and I have also noticed that we tend to brood by generalizing this situation.
When I later found a really good job, with real managers who know how to recognize competent people, who don't rely on "cronyism", I was reassured: there are still great companies where it's good to work. On the other hand, it's sometimes difficult to find them 🙂

More seriously, I have years of experience in multinationals behind me and I have noticed that when you only see dysfunctions, cronyism, smooth talkers, professional injustices, mobbing, etc. (which have already existed since the beginning, even when you are happy with your work or you are the superstar of the department or the company), it is time to change companies.
On another level, the remuneration of capital is much higher than that of work (unfortunately). This is why I have been working for more than 10 years to transform my employee savings into capital. "If you can't beat them, join them!"
Personally, I am a "happy" shareholder of Swissre, Nestle, Roche, etc....and I care very little about the corporate governance that these companies have with regard to their employees....few people will cry over my fate when I am part of a charette in a few years....the shareholders, they will applaud.....it is not cynicism, it is just reality.
In the meantime, I'm trying to grow my dividends. If all goes well, these dividends will buy me a chicken suit in a few years.... "Goodbye Mr. President!!!!!"... I still have a few years to repeat my role 🙂
Hi Birdie, as usual we are in complete agreement. You are right, it is time to change creamery and that is why I put my words into action. You are also right, capital is better paid than work, with less effort. Like you, I care little about the governance of the companies in which I am a shareholder. I have enough to do with the one that employs me 😉 It is normal that what we toil on one side, as an employee, we get back on the other side as a shareholder. We can see this as cynicism, but for me it is just pragmatism.

I agree with Phil, it really depends on the companies. Some paint the blackboard you describe every day, others are really more welcoming according to those who work there. In your case, if you see this every day for a while... it's clear that you have to say goodbye to the idiots.
I agree with you on the interest of selling your added value for your own account, or on behalf of a group that is worth it. The entrepreneurs around me who have succeeded have often told me that in the end it is still the thrill of starting a company and living this adventure alone. Consequently, do you really believe that changing companies and remaining an employee will solve the problem of independence in the long term for you? (here I am talking about professional independence).

It depends on my future boss. You can be an employee and enjoy a lot of independence. These positions are rare and I hope that this will be the case for me. Otherwise, it will just be another small detour on the long road to financial independence … 😉
