I've always tried to calculate the risk/reward ratio in every decision I make. For example, if I invest 2,000 $ in a company, the worst thing that can happen to me is to lose that money if the company goes bankrupt. That's my only risk: 2,000 $. What about profits? Well, the company could become a phenomenal success and make me a ton of money. In theory, my advantage is infinite. That's why I like investing in the stock market.
If we translate this idea to financial independence, what are the advantages and disadvantages of taking a early retirement ? This is an important question. If you share this goal with your loved ones, they'll give you all sorts of reasons not to do it. You might get sick, you might run out of money or, above all, you might get bored! It's true that work isn't boring...
On the other hand, what are the advantages of early retirement? You could travel, take up hobbies you never had time for when you were working full-time. Maybe you'll enjoy reading, cooking, DIY, gardening, woodworking, or getting involved in voluntary work. Maybe you'd like to laze around, sleep and relax at the beach. Maybe you'd like to watch movies. Maybe you'd like to spend more time with your loved ones, which isn't possible when you're working 50 hours a week. You can explore life and enrich yourself with everything this planet has to offer.
The only risk of retiring early is that you'll have to go back to work. But like the investment, your benefit is infinite.
