Clorox (NYSE:CLX), +7.56% Friday

Clorox

What a week! As Egypt was finally freed from Mubarak on Friday, Clorox took advantage of the opportunity to jump 7,56%! Not bad for a household products company, an "old man's" investment, with a volatility of only 9,63%. We had had it in a long position for a while, so here we are rewarded. The billionaire Carl Icahn took a stake of 9.08%, believing, like us, that the stock was undervalued.

Clorox is really the kind of boring, cheesy and relatively simple business. A few cleaning products, some cosmetics and the case is done. A little bit of "high tech" though with the iRobot Scooba, a floor cleaning robot. Clorox has 7,600 employees and has been in business since 1913. Now that's sustainable development... The advantage of this type of business is that it is well protected from crises.

Clorox offers an attractive long-term dividend of $3.08%, with a yield of growth of distributions of 14.23%, which is very appreciable. The dividend has continued to increase for 34 years and despite all that the distribution rate is barely higher than 50%, which leaves the company with a good margin of maneuver in the event of a difficult passage.

This week we also bought Coca-Cola, following the adjustment of our algorithm to better protect us against currency fluctuations. With the help of these two stocks, but also of our other positions which have performed well overall and of the dollar, the profitability of our portfolio has risen to -2.23% since February 2010. We are still a little behind the market, but the situation is clearly improving. Above all, the portfolio volatility is very good, at only 10.93%.

Taking the euro as the reference currency, volatility is higher, at 15.95%, but so is profitability, at 5.74%, also slightly below the market. The Sharpe ratio of our portfolio and the CAC 40 are practically identical. On the income side, nothing new, but we have not yet entered the dividend "season".

  1. Jerome,
Do you have an explanation for why Clorox's stock price is not taking off?
Very high debt could be a possibility. Do you see anything else?
I see that you remain in Strong buy…. Do the stock's prospects really seem good to you?
