Take the test: MBTI - Big Five (OCEAN)
Portrait of an INTP
The INTP sees everything in terms of possibilities for improvement or transformation. They live primarily inside their own mind, having the ability to analyze difficult problems, identify patterns, and find logical explanations. They are driven to transform problems into logical explanations and do not place as much importance or value on the outside world. This can develop into a sense of personal responsibility to solve theoretical problems and help society move toward greater understanding.
His mind is constantly generating new theories or proving or disproving existing theories. The INTP approaches problems and theories with enthusiasm and skepticism, ignoring existing rules and opinions, and defining his own approach to solving them. He looks for patterns and logical explanations for everything that interests him. He is usually very bright and can be objectively critical in his analysis.
"Dreamers"
INTPs love new ideas and love abstractions and theories. They enjoy discussing concepts with others. They may seem "dreamy" and distant to others, because they spend a lot of time inside their minds, daydreaming about theories. INTPs hate routine. They prefer to build complex theoretical solutions and leave the implementation of the system to others. They will invest a lot of time and energy in finding a solution to a problem.
INTPs do not like to lead or control people. They are very tolerant and flexible in most situations, unless one of their strongly held beliefs has been violated or challenged. In this case, they can take a very rigid stance. The INTP is likely to be very shy when it comes to meeting new people. On the other hand, they are very confident and outgoing with people they know well, or when discussing theories they fully understand.
Objectivity
INTPs do not respect decisions made on a subjective or emotional basis. They constantly strive to reach logical conclusions to problems and do not understand the importance or relevance of emotional and/or subjective considerations in decisions. Because of this, INTPs are generally out of touch with how people feel and are not naturally inclined to respond to the emotional needs of others.
The INTP has difficulty providing the warmth and support that is sometimes needed in romantic relationships. He can also sometimes become overly critical and ironic with others. If he cannot exploit his abilities, he can also become negative and cynical. He can also be distracted and disconnected from reality, forgetting to pay his bills, or dressing tastelessly.
Ideas that are not always understood by others
For the INTP, it is important that ideas and facts are expressed correctly and succinctly. Sometimes, their ideas are not easily understood by others. The INTP will not try to adapt the truth, in order to explain it in a way that others can understand. It is important, however, that they place importance on expressing their theories in a way that is understandable. In the end, an amazing discovery means nothing if you are the only person who understands it.
INTPs are generally very independent, unconventional, and original. They do not place much value on certain traditional values such as popularity and security. INTPs are generally complex characters and can be restless and temperamental. They are highly resourceful and possess unconventional thought patterns that allow them to analyze ideas differently. Many of the world's scientific breakthroughs have been made by INTPs.
INTPs are in their element when they can work on theories independently. When given an environment that values their creative genius and eccentricity, INTPs can accomplish truly remarkable things. They are the pioneers of new ideas in our society.
Career
INTPs have a special gift for generating and analyzing theories. They are highly perceptive and creative thinkers, which allows them to grasp complex abstract thoughts quickly. INTPs thrive in careers that allow them a great deal of autonomy and where they can work alone on developing and analyzing complex theories and abstractions. The goal of their work is the discovery of a truth, rather than the discovery of a practical application.

Relationships
The inner world of INTPs is rich with imagination and excitement. As a result, they often find the outer world to be flat. This can result in a lack of motivation to form and maintain relationships. INTPS are therefore not likely to have a very large circle of important relationships in their lives. They prefer to have a few very close connections, which they hold in high regard. They are not naturally attuned to the feelings and emotional needs of others. INTPs tend to be difficult to approach until the other person has proven themselves "worthy" of hearing their thoughts. They prefer to be around people they consider intelligent. Once in a relationship, they are very faithful and loyal, and form affectionate bonds that are pure and simple.
INTP Strengths
- Possesses a love for those close to him that is almost childlike in its purity
- Generally laid back and easy going
- Richly imaginative and creative
- Is not personally threatened by conflict or criticism
- Undemanding, simple needs
INTP Weaknesses
- Not in harmony with the feelings of others
- Unwilling to respond to emotional needs
- Difficulty expressing one's own feelings and emotions
- Distrusts others
- Not very good at practical matters
- Ignores conflicts or gets angry
INTP Romantic Relationships
INTPs approach their intimate relationships very seriously. They are usually faithful, loyal, easy-going, with simple daily needs. While the INTP's inner life is very theoretical and complex, their outer life in comparison is usually quite simple. They like to keep the complexity of the outer world to a minimum in order to focus on their inner theories. Their love is honest, pure in nature, simple and uncomplicated.
Sexually, INTPs approach intimacy with enthusiasm and excitement. Some downplay the need for sex, but most use their imagination to enjoy it to the fullest.
Difficulty understanding others
The biggest problem in INTP relationships is their slowness in understanding and meeting their partner's emotional needs. They may be extremely dedicated to the relationship and deeply in love with their partner, but fail to understand them and express their own feelings.
INTPs dislike conflict and ignore it when it occurs. They may also approach it from an analytical perspective, which can make the situation worse if their partner simply wants to feel supported and loved. Most people (especially those with the Feeling preference) simply want to be encouraged and supported when they are angry.
The INTP's natural partner is the ENTJ, Or ESTJ to a lesser extent.
As parents
The greatest goal of INTP parents is to see their children grow into independent, rational adults. They encourage them to grow as individuals, rather than trying to fit them into a preconceived mold. INTPs will emphasize autonomy through nurturing. They respect their children's opinions and wishes.
INTP parents are laid back and flexible with their children. They rely on their spouse to provide the necessary guidance. Since they don't live in an overly structured way themselves, they don't want to create that kind of environment for their children. If their spouse is not someone with the "J" preference, their children may suffer from a lack of boundaries.
Despite their unstructured approach to parenting, INTPs take their role as parents very seriously and go to great lengths to help their children grow into wise, independent adults. They enjoy their parenting role and are very proud of their offspring.
Children of INTP parents see them as loyal, fair, tolerant, and caring.
As friends
INTPs have friends who share their interests and activities. Since they love theories, ideas, and concepts, they have no patience or understanding for people who have a preference for Sensing.
Financial Independence for the INTP
Logical, independent, original, and objective, the INTP possesses many of the qualities necessary not only to invest in the stock market, but also to become financially independent.
Let's see what the four INTP dimensions bring to the table. MBTI regarding investment and financial independence:
- I – Introversion, preferred to extroversion: INTPs are generally discreet and reserved. They can go on long inner journeys, without the need to resort to the artifices of consumer society. They do not get bored when they have "nothing" to do, quite the contrary, they need time for themselves and lose energy during their social relationships. The world of work is most of the time unfavorable to INTPs because of the multiple interactions it creates. An INTP therefore prefers to spend time thinking about their investments and how they can improve their quality of life. Introversion brings the autonomy necessary for the future INTP rentier.
- N – iNtuition, preferred to sensation: INTPs are more abstract than concrete. They focus their attention on future possibilities rather than immediate realities. This characteristic allows them to detect trends and understand their environment as a whole, which is very useful for investing in the stock market.
- T – Thinking, preferred to feeling: when INTPs make a decision, they give greater importance to logic than to passionate considerations. INTPs are therefore less likely to be guided by their feelings, very bad advisors when it comes to investing in the stock market. They know how to take risks in a calculated manner. Moreover, not relying on social considerations makes INTPs particularly independent-minded, a fundamental criterion for a future rentier.
- P – Perception, preferred over judgment: INTPs withhold judgment, preferring not to make decisions too quickly and keeping as many options open as possible. This can be a definite asset when investing, as we often tend to rush into an investment idea too quickly. On the other hand, this preference over perception is also often synonymous with a lack of determination and follow-through on long-term goals, which are necessary for pursuing a quest for financial independence.
Potential future annuitants
INTJs and INTPs are vastly overrepresented among the community of investors seeking financial independence. Almost half are INTJs (while they only represent 2% in the population) and almost a quarter are INTPs (3% in the population). These two types therefore represent 3/4 of (future) rentiers, while they are only 5% in the population. Something to think about...
Are they the only ones who have the skills to succeed in this particular quest or is it rather their extraordinary personality that pushes them to free themselves from work and consumer society? Certainly a bit of both... In any case, if you are an INTP, you are already on the right path. I strongly advise you to read these articles:

Hi Jerome, I find that there is an error in the intp profile, in the "weak points" section, it says: "bad for money matters"
While further in the description we can read that it is the ideal candidate for questions of investments and financial independence.
Also another small mistake, in the detail of the letters that characterize this profile, INTP, the last one is P like Perception but in the last part it is written J - Perception. Except this J is that of another close profile, the INTJ.
That's all, otherwise very good test thank you
Hello Seb
Thanks for your comment. Indeed a small bug on the "P", it's corrected, thanks for the feedback.
Regarding the money question, it can be confusing indeed, so I modified it. In fact, the INTP is not very good at material matters in everyday life. It is this practical side of money management that is lacking in him. On the other hand, he is a fine strategist and he is very rational. So investment, the more theoretical side of money, suits him very well. As also mentioned, he has a small weak point compared to the INTJ, it is the lack of determination and follow-through of objectives which are very useful on the long road to financial independence.
“Not very good at practical matters”
Unless we conceptualize them ^^
I recognize myself in this “portrait” (it is quite striking), except in this sentence.
Having a tendency to approach practical questions (both in the personal and professional context) from a theoretical angle in order to rationalize them, I have therefore developed a great sense of practicality. INTP can compensate!
Interesting this test.
Hi, interesting description 😉
on the other hand I have a little question: "P - Perception, preferred to perception", is there a typo there? ^^
just !
thanks for the feedback, it's fixed
Good morning!
I took your test twice because it didn't suit me at all. The first time I was a thinker, the second time a donor. I don't find myself in either one. When I read your different portraits, the one that most resembles me is an executor.
Good morning
I am INTP and ADD, attention deficit disorder not hype, my brain is a dream reactor but very poorly exploited
This test represents me very well.
The feelings-thought relationship should be developed more because it is too extreme as a result, I had INFP at the beginning because I did not put that I was a monster of rational logic; but I am much more INTP, so there are things to review in the test and I also want to add that there are far too often the same diverted questions that are repeated.
Ah, yeah, I get that too when I take the test. I mean, I'm more rational than emotional. I finally figured out where it could come from.
In my opinion, the MBTI cannot take into account all psychological aspects even if it is already very precise ^^ and it takes into account the major factors. According to my hypothesis, many Intuitive types are hypersensitive or/and hyperempathetic emotionally and this plays into the answers to the question determining T or F like "Winning a debate matters less to you than being sure that no one is upset". Which may be true when you are T with average empathy but not necessarily when you have more developed empathy which pushes you not to hurt others because you perceive the emotions of others more strongly. Suddenly it directs the answer towards F.
I hope I was understandable ^^.
Just to say that rentier is not a career, you don't decide to become rentier, this kind of blunder does not make the site credible. Too bad.
So François, just to put your words in order, "Just to say that rentier is not a career", you should have stopped there, it was perfect. It's true that it's not a career choice, however "We don't decide to become rentier" Ah? Yet it is indeed an objective that is decided I imagine, unless we become rentier by chance upon the death of a loved one.
It only integrates the life of the annuity as a predisposition to this profile, perhaps not all profiles are equal when faced with the annuity.
I confirm. There are not many among the 16 MBTI profiles who are predisposed to becoming a rentier – according to a VOLUNTARY approach. Of course, some become so passively, through inheritance or winning the lottery (although there it is a bit aroused, but anyway). And even if it falls on our head, if we do not have the adequate MBTI profile, like for example INTP or INTJ, there is a strong chance that this new life will go very badly… and that it will not last very long.
And I also come back to "Rentier is not a career". This is not correct. If you take the time to browse this site or read my e-book, you will see on the contrary, as long as this approach is voluntary, that it is a career like any other job. And maybe even more...
Great, I find your description more complete than other sites.
I find it a shame not to have addressed the possibility of a career in more artistic environments, I think that this type of personality could feel very good there, I also found several other INTPs in my class.
FYI I'm in a digital creation school.
