Right now I could be a rentier under more clement skies.

Right now I could be a rentier under more clement skies.Right now I could be sipping a cocktail on a beach in a warm country. I could live my life under more clement skies, without having to work. I could already be a rentier and take it easy.

Several years ago, I had made a plan to emigrate to Costa Rica. The immigration policy there is indeed very accommodating. You just have to be able to prove either

  • that we are "officially" retired with an income of 1,000$
  • that we are rentiers and that we can receive 2,500 $ per month for 2 years
  • that you can invest 200,000 $ in real estate or a local business.

The cost of living is also cheap. The average salary is 400 $. Many locals live on much less, almost half.

At the time, when I had initiated this plan, I did not yet have the means to "afford" Costa Rica. Today it would not only be easy, but above all I could live there like a pasha.

In the meantime, life has gone on and I don't want to go that far anymore. I could go and live in the Algarve (Portugal) or Croatia. The cost of living is higher than in Costa Rica, but it would still be within my capabilities. In addition, they are beautiful destinations, with a pleasant climate. These countries also have a European culture and the mentality of their inhabitants suits me better than that of Latin American countries.

That being said, my attachment to my region and especially my family life make me prefer to stay in my country today. The path to financial independence is certainly longer, but I am at least sure that I like the final destination. And then afterwards, I would always have the choice if the desire arises to go to skies with a milder climate. Better, I could even alternate these different destinations depending on my desires.
